The incident began around noon on Friday, March 15, when the man was spotted on the overpass at North Avenue in New Rochelle, said New Rochelle Police.
State police closed the highway in both directions for at least two hours before the man was pulled to safety by first responders and a round of applause from onlookers.
"Yes, the man was removed safely," said New Rochelle Police Capt. Cosmo Costa.
During the incident, traffic was backed up from New Rochelle to I-287.
Motorists may experience residual backups.
